How to Land a Job in Tech: The Right Way (Without Wasting Time)

Why Most People Struggle to Get a Job in Tech

Helping People Get Jobs
Helping People Get Jobs

Every day, people ask me how to break into tech, land a software engineering job, or transition into data science. The truth? Most job seekers are being taught all the wrong things. They’re following outdated advice, listening to HR generalists who don’t understand tech, and applying for jobs the same way thousands of other candidates do—only to get ignored.

I lead TekRecruiter, a tech staffing and solutions company, and through my TikTok (@ronsmith.official), I teach people exactly how to land a job in tech the right way—for free. Hundreds of people have already gotten jobs by following my advice, and I’m going to break down how you can do it too.

Why Am I Helping?

The Reality of Recruiting - What most people get wrong.
The Reality of Recruiting - What most people get wrong.

As a Tech staffing and solutions firm, TekRecruiter focuses on highly experienced professionals—but that means we don’t always actively recruit junior and entry-level talent, most staffing and recruiting firms don't. I see this gap in the industry, and I want to help.

This is my way of fulfilling a purpose—helping people get jobs. As an industry leader, I see it as my responsibility to support both up-and-coming professionals and the hiring managers who build teams. I’m not just guiding junior and entry-level talent—I’m also providing a platform for hiring managers to connect with them at no cost.

Through networking events, direct connections, and ongoing mentorship, I’m ensuring that companies have access to strong, motivated talent while new professionals get the opportunities they need to grow. I will personally lead and provide updates on these opportunities through TikTok (@ronsmith.official), so both job seekers and hiring managers always know what’s available.

How to Land a Job in Tech Fast:

1. Stop Taking Advice from the Wrong People

Most job seekers make the mistake of following generic career advice that doesn’t work for tech roles. HR generalists and "career coaches" often give advice that’s too broad and doesn’t apply to technical hiring.

What You Need Instead:

  • Tech-Specific Resume Advice – Your resume needs to be built like a hiring manager expects, not a fluffy career document.

  • Industry-Specific Interview Prep – The way developers, DevOps engineers, and data scientists get hired is very different from other fields.

  • The Right Job Search Strategy – Most people are applying to jobs blindly without understanding how tech companies actually hire.

I break down all of this on my TikTok so you’re not wasting time with bad advice.

2. Understand the Different Roles in Tech

Another major mistake? People think tech is only coding. Tech is massive, and if you don’t understand all the different roles, you could be missing out on a career that’s actually a better fit for you.

High-Demand Tech Roles (That Aren’t Just Software Engineering):

  • Cybersecurity (SOC Analysts, Ethical Hackers, Compliance)

  • Cloud & DevOps Engineering (AWS, GCP, Azure)

  • Product & Project Management (Product Owners, Scrum Masters, Agile Coaches)

  • Business & Systems Analysis (Business Analysts, Systems Analysts, Business Process Consultants)

  • IT Support & Administration (Help Desk, IT Support Specialists, System Administrators)

  • Technical Sales & Solutions (Sales Engineers, Solutions Architects, Technical Account Managers)

  • UI/UX & Human-Centered Design (UX Researchers, UI Designers, Accessibility Specialists)

If you’re unsure which role is right for you, I break down each career path on my TikTok so you can make an informed decision. Follow me: @ronsmith.official

3. Build a Resume That Gets Past Recruiters

If your resume isn’t getting responses, you’re probably making these mistakes:

  • Too many soft skills, not enough technical skills.

  • Listing everything you’ve ever done instead of what’s relevant.

  • Not including metrics or impact in your work experience.

How to Fix It:

  • Use the right keywords – Your resume needs to match what recruiters are actually searching for.

  • Keep it clear and technical – Hiring managers care about your skills and what you can do, not fluffy career summaries.

  • Highlight projects and impact – Show how you contributed, not just what you did.

Need a breakdown of how to fix your resume? I review resumes on my TikTok daily.

4. Master the Tech Interview Process

Most people prepare for tech interviews the wrong way. They either:

  • Memorize random coding problems without understanding them.

  • Don’t prepare for behavioral questions at all.

  • Have no idea how to negotiate their offer.

How to Prepare the Right Way:

  • Study real-world coding problems – Leetcode is great, but focus on problems that match your target job.

  • Know your projects inside out – You’ll be asked about what you’ve built, not just what you’ve studied.

  • Practice behavioral questions – Every hiring manager will ask, “Tell me about a time when…” questions.

  • Learn salary negotiation – If you don’t negotiate your offer, you’re leaving money on the table.

I teach all of this on my TikTok with live examples and mock interview breakdowns.

5. Apply to Jobs the Right Way (and Get Responses)

Most people apply to hundreds of jobs online and never hear back. That’s because tech hiring doesn’t work like that.

The Right Way to Apply for Tech Jobs:

  • Network with hiring managers and recruiters (I show you how on my TikTok)

  • Reach out to companies directly instead of relying only on job boards

  • Use LinkedIn properly – Your profile should be optimized for searches

  • Stop using generic applications – Your resume needs to be tailored
